“I was hugely touched by the room. In al its strictness, sobriety and alignment, it was nevertheless a warm and welcoming place. There is no way the amount of detail and care invested in the room can leave you untouched. You cannot help but be sucked in with an irresistible urge to look at all the details.
The artist started by contemplating what should be visible of the original room and where you permit art to do its work. Van Stuijvenberg found a superb balance. By leaving a strip of the original wall between the floor and the lowest lines of her work, the art and the room have the space to breath together. There where the furnace is nestled against the fireplace by the door, there where the room was somewhat chaotic anyway, she too chose to leave part of the room visible. The result is a wondrous harmony between room and art, both with sufficient presence and a harmonious result.
Further great balance is found in an actual contrast between the grey felt’s imposing gesture and the localised mass with subtle details on the bed linen. The love and attention devoted to the mattress and how the sheet is fixed by a zip – a sheet that serves as a sort of sleeping bag once you have released the initial, delicate ribbons. So much care, So much attention to detail.
Releasing demands focus, as focus is the basis for the entire room. The room is about universal actions, and certainly about the actions needed to achieve the room’s impressions. Sober actions yet not one too many”
