Instant Fall

Two trees.

One has been felled and is lying prone on an old tile floor. The foliage fell first, followed by the trunk and the branches. It now has a respectable position on the floor, with its intrinsic parts dissected and in the position it has known from the start. At peace with its fate yet in a position to rise again layer by layer.

The other still stands proud. This tree is immaterial and owes its existence to the presence of other material in its environment. The tree, based on a cherry tree from Witzenhausen (around Kassel, Germany), has been cut from various layers of felt. Within each layer there is a closer focus on the tree’s innards. As more felt is cut away, so the volume of the immaterial tree increases. The tree owes its existence to its environment that is increasingly reduced.

Two trees – inseparably linked. They exist only by virtue of the other and the two make a single whole. Cut from the same felt that assumes different shapes in the different layers. The interplay of lines created by the light striking the sides of the felt at different angles in front and above serves to create a powerful piece of art.
